Developing an editorial art style for a new type of news brand

Grid News set out to create an editorial style that was exciting, engaging, and recognizable. Grid’s editorial mission was to write stories from a well-researched and unbiased viewpoint that more thoroughly explored the headlines we see from other news sources. The graphics team wanted the same attention and thoroughness to be shown in our graphics.

As a member of Grid’s design team, I worked quickly to develop unique and engaging artwork for up to eight stories a day. I also selected and produced hundreds of photos for articles. My primary roles were to create editorial illustrations and animations as well as to produce the artwork for our weekly series.

The Process

So, how exactly were these graphics made? Here’s an example of what the process typically looked like:

1) Recieve Headline, article context/ author requests, and due date

Headline: A Xi Jinping 'Report Card': Six ways Xi's decade of crackdowns and campaigns have changed China

Article Context: Will be talking about major events from Xi Jinping’s presidency- please include references to renewable energy, protests.

2) Search for relevant images in public domain forums and on Getty images.

Assemble a collection of images and begin to experiment with layouts.

3) Finalize layout, send to journalist for review. Revise if necessary.

4) Publish!
